Falmouth's town owned Vestas V-82 turbines Wind 1 and Wind 2, which went online in 2010 and 2012 were the subjects of eleven lawsuits and multiple appeals by abutters during their operation. Neighbors complained about a long list of turbine-related health effects which included hearing loss, nausea, and sleep disorders to dizziness, blood pressure, tinnitus, and describe the noise 24/7 as torture. Each turbine according to Vestas warnings generates 110 decibels of noise.

Wind 1 already had been shut down in Falmouth in 2015. The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled the turbine needed special permit 240-166 to continue operating, a special permit application was denied by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

The current Select Board appealed the Zoning Board decision. Then in June 2017, Barnstable Superior Court upheld the denial. Next, the Massachusetts Appeals Court agreed that both the Vestas 1.65-megawatt turbines posed a nuisance and ordered that they never operate again at the Wastewater Treatment Plant site.

The Select Board in November of 2019 voted 2.5 million to decommission the wind turbines and move the turbines out of town through a sale or lease.

2011 -Vestas CEO

Letter to Karen Elleman from Vestas wind company CEO Ditlev Engel nothing we can do about low-frequency noise

Engel, Ditlev CEO Vestas - June 30, 2011 :

"Dear Karen Ellemann,"Following previous correspondence, I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the limits for low frequency noise from wind turbines now being proposed."
"At this point you may have asked yourself why it is that Vestas does not just make changes to the wind turbines so that they produce less noise? The simple answer is that at the moment it is not technically possible to do so, and it requires time and resources because presently we are at the forefront of what is technically possible for our large wind turbines, and they are the most efficient of all."

Yours sincerely, Vestas Wind Systems A/S
Ditlev Engel
