Wareham Man Found Dead In Cape Cod Canal Under Bourne Bridge: Police

Police received reports of a person scaling the bridge on Saturday. A 32-year-old man was found in the water a short time later.

BOURNE, MA — A Wareham, Massachusetts man was found dead in the Cape Cod Canal on Saturday night, Bourne police said.

"The Bourne Police Department and Massachusetts State Police received calls reporting an individual possibly scaling the Bourne Bridge," police said.

Multiple agencies responded to the bridge in hopes of finding a person still on the structure but were unable to locate anyone.

"The US Army Corps and Coast Guard began searching the Cape Cod Canal and located a 32 year old male from Wareham deceased in the water a short time later," police said.

Police Chief Brandon Esip said his department is one of many across the state responding to situations in which someone is dealing with a mental health crisis.

"Words can not express the sorrow we feel for the young man’s family and friends and we pray for them in this dire hour," he said.
