WIND SPIN: Unjust Rewards

In the 'letters' section of Friday's Falmouth Enterprise (3/7/14), Ron Zweig accurately captures the economic chaos our town suffers from the wind project problem. He explains how we've come into such fiscal hazard by wrongly shifting blame.

It’s unfortunate that Falmouth officials and Town Meeting did not take into account the full consequence or responsibility of their actions 5 years ago.  How could they have? They were not given the full dimension of potential harms that could be imposed upon the community by poorly sited wind turbines.  Is it conceivable that Town Meeting would have approved funding the project if the scope of impact had included that a number residents were being required to sacrifice their personal health and welfare?

Mr. Zweig is “spot on,” when he warns of moral consequence.  The “messengers” have followed the designated local protocol to gain relief (boards of health, selectmen and appeals) in hopes to avoid litigation.  Yet, many residents are suspicious when the town, acknowledging a problem exists, sues the local body designed to provide “messenger” relief.  Is that action frivolous?  Does such behavior impart a moral position worth defense? It’s unfortunate that some Falmouth officials do not take into account the full consequence or responsibility of their actions today.

Trying to make the problem somehow the fault of the “messengers” contradicts the intent of last spring’s Town Meeting.  Nearly unanimous approval was given to the revised Wind Turbine Bylaw to prevent, the problem identified by various town boards, from such ever happening to the community again.

Trying to blame residents for defending essential personal health and property rights is a divisive advocacy position.  Falmouth is better than this Wind Spin!
