Residents in the area of Round House Road in Bourne were put on lockdown Thursday morning as police responded to reports of gunshots, fire and explosions in the area.
As of an hour ago, around 9 a.m., police requested residents continue to stay in their homes and away from Round House Road.
Around 2:12 a.m., Bourne police received multiple calls reporting a car on fire and several explosions in the Clay Pond area of Bourne. Police drove to the area and saw a car engulfed in flames, blocking access to the street.
Police believe the suspect purposefully set the car on fire to keep emergency responders from reaching Round House Road, according to a report from the Associated Press.
After police were already on the scene, a woman called 9-1-1 saying she and another person had been shot in a home on Round House Road and that the man who shot them had run away.
9-1-1 also received other calls from residents on Round House Road who heard the gunshots.
On their way to help the gunshot victims, police officers encountered the accused shooter. Gunfire broke out and a Bourne police officer was shot in the back below his bulletproof vest.
Officers from nearby agencies and departments responded to help Bourne police, including officers from the Falmouth Police Department, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police.
Bourne officers came across multiple suspicious items for which they called in the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad. Boston.com reports that police suspect those items were fake and placed by the alledged shooter.
“It was an ambush,” Bourne Police Chief Dennis Woodside to the Cape Cod Times. “This guy set the whole scene up. This was an ambush on the cops.”
Because of the gunfire and suspected explosives, police were not able to reach the gunshot victims until 2:48 a.m. They found two women at the residence, one injured and another dead at the scene.
Police are investigating the possibility that the women and the alleged shooter are all connected to the U.S. Coast Guard, according to the Boston Globe. The Globe reported the man may have traveled to Bourne after an argument with one of the women.
Police took the suspect into custody, but kept the area on lockdown afterward to clear the area of the devices, according to Boston.com.
A MedFlight helicopter was called to transport the injured police officer to an area hospital. Around 7 a.m. Woodside told the Cape Cod Times that he heard the officer was going to be OK.
The gunshot victim was taken to a hospital in Rhode Island. Notice of her condition is not yet available.
