You ART What You Eat' Features Four Zoom Art Talks

The chief art critic of The Boston Globe, Murray Whyte, is among the special speakers in a virtual series of Art Talks sponsored by Falmouth Art Center next month. The center’s 11th annual fundraiser, “You ART What You Eat,” became virtual last spring after Governor Charles D. Baker Jr. ordered restaurants closed throughout the commonwealth the day before the event was set to begin.

The virtual version of the event was so popular that the center is going virtual again this year with four art talks in April. The talks start at 6:30 PM on Zoom.

On Tuesday, April 6, Boston Globe art critic Murray Whyte will discuss “The Black Painter Who Changed Providence,” about the 19th-century artist and cultural leader Edward Bannister.

UMass at Boston Art History Professor Carol Scollans will present “American Modernism in New England from the 1890s to the 1960s” on Wednesday, April 14.

Elaine King, a retired art history professor and museum director with a home in Cataumet, will speak about “Spirituality in Contemporary Art” on Tuesday, April 20.

On Thursday, April 29, artist Jay Critchley of Provincetown, who specializes in provocative installations, will speak about his current art series, “Democracy of the Land: Mobil Warming.”

People can purchase individual tickets to the talks for $65 per computer device, or get tickets for all four talks for $150.

The first 100 people to purchase tickets will receive a special gift from the center, a ceramic vessel and a woven square made by Falmouth Art Center artisans.

The event doubles as a promotion for local restaurants that have been hard hit during the pandemic. For each talk, patrons are encouraged to order takeout from a local restaurant that has created a special prix fixe menu for the occasion. Patrons pay the restaurants directly, with 100 percent of the proceeds from the meal going to the restaurants.

“In the past, local restaurants have supported the Falmouth Art Center for this annual fundraiser. This year, we wanted the event to support our favorite local restaurants, as we know they have been struggling during this difficult time,” said Falmouth Art Center executive director Laura Reckford.
