Bread and Puppet's "The Seditious Conspiracy Theater Presents: A Monument to the Political Prisoner Oscar Lopez Rivera"
Bread & Puppet's eleven day residency @ MassArt includes performances to raise awareness about political prisoner Oscar Lopez Rivera.
In keeping with their long standing tradition of “sublime arsekicking puppetry,” the award-winning socio-political Vermont-based Bread & Puppet Theater, featuring Artistic Director Peter Schumann and his merry troupe of puppeteers, returns to Boston as Artists-in-Residence at MassArt, bringing their signature powerful imagery, masked characters, and giant papier-mâché puppets.
Their eleven day residency, with events open to the public, includes “The Seditious Conspiracy Theater Presents: A Monument to the Political Prisoner Oscar Lopez Rivera” which features a group of competent clowns, supported by a chorus of seditious conspiracy dancers, demonstrating the effects of U.S. colonialism on the island of Puerto Rico, as well as the power of the government over the individual freedom seeker. This is demonstrated by highlighting the stages in Oscar’s life which led to his incarceration. Oscar Lopez Rivera is currently one of the world’s longest held political prisoners, and has been jailed for more than 34 years.
After each performance (recommended for ages 10 & up), sourdough rye bread will be served and the audience is welcome to stay and check out all the masks and puppets and to peruse the Cheap Art, posters, and banners for sale.
