Motion To Dismiss Manslaughter Charge Against Michelle Carter Denied

With the denial, the trial will continue.

TAUNTON, MA — A judge in Bristol Juvenile Court in Taunton has denied a motion to dismiss an involuntary manslaughter charge against 20-year-old Plainville resident Michelle Carter.

Defense lawyers for Carter, who is accused of convincing her boyfriend Conrad Roy to kill himself, asked for a dismissal because they say there is no evidence of her physically assisting in the suicide, noting that Roy asked for her help in ending his life and there is no state statute about assisting in suicide.

Between Roy's suicide notes and video of his mental state, they say there is not enough evidence to say Carter is the reason for Roy's death, according to the Boston Globe.

Prosecutors, however, argue that no physical contact was needed and Carter was aware of Roy's mental health problems.

With the denial, the trial will continue.
