Bill Belichick Open To Leaner Personnel Role As Pats Future Uncertain

Head coach Bill Belichick is set to meet with owner Robert Kraft this week. That meeting could decide the future of the organization.

Bill Belichick remains under contract with the New England Patriots, he said during a Monday press conference. Still, a meeting with owner Robert Kraft this week should decide his future in Foxborough.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — New England Patriots fans learned, or confirmed, a few tidbits from head coach Bill Belichick's Monday press conference.

Belichick talked about the team's "disappointing" regular season finish, but the most interesting pieces came from his transparency about the future of the organization, including his possible role in that.

Of course, Belichick's future has been the topic of discussion for most of the year. Perhaps the greatest coach of all-time, Belichick's sheen has worn off over the last two years as personnel decisions on both the offensive and coaching staff have derailed the development of first-round pick Mac Jones and led to poor on-field results.

When asked whether he would consider a lesser role on the personnel side of the organization — something supporters of the coach say would be reason enough to keep him in New England — Belichick said he would be open to it.

"Look, I'm for whatever we collectively decide as an organization is the best thing to help our football team. I have multiple roles in that, and I rely on a lot of people to help me in those responsibilities; somebody has to have the final say. Whatever that process is, I'm only part of it," Belichick said.

Bringing additional opinions into personnel matters could prove fruitful for the Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Though it could be debated what the Patriots' biggest needs are — they only won four games, after all — the two biggest appear to be at wide receiver and quarterback.

The team's first-round wide receiver selections are a thing of infamy in draft circles and among football fans, but quarterback development has also proved lacking in the post-Tom Brady era.

Still, even with a compromise possible, Kraft still could decide to part ways with Belichick, though it wouldn't be so simple.

In the Monday press conference, Belichick spoke about his current contract status in what was a rare moment for the often tight-lipped signal caller.

"I'm under contract. I'm going to do what I always do, which is every day I come in, work as hard as I can to help the team in whatever way I can," he said.

As "Black Monday" roars on, there are already early rumors about both who could replace Belichick should he leave New England, and where he could go.

Sources told Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report that Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel would be interested in a Patriots reunion should Belichick be let go.

Additionally, Dianna Russini of The Athletic said the Atlanta Falcons, after firing head coach Arthur Smith, would be interested in hiring or acquiring Belichick.

It was also reported earlier this week that the Washington Commanders and Las Vegas Raiders would be interested in Belichick's services.

Washington fired head coach Ron Rivera on Monday, and Las Vegas has a decision to make on interim head coach Antonio Pierce.
