Bill Belichick Is Out In New England. What's Next?

The New England Patriots are set to hire Jerod Mayo to replace Bill Belichick, but where Belichick lands is still up in the air.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — Bill Belichick called a Thursday news conference announcing that he would no longer coach the New England Patriots a celebration. It was much more somber than most celebrations.

Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft met with media members to inform them that they "mutually agreed" to part ways.

The move didn't come as a surprise, but it's still jarring to think that Belichick, the most successful head coach in the history of the National Football League, won't be on the sidelines for the Patriots come next season.

Kraft is now tasked with replacing the man who he believes is the greatest head coach in the history of the league. In Jerod Mayo, who, it's being reported, will replace Belichick, he signals a youth movement on the coaching front while leaning into some institutional knowledge of The Patriot Way.

This decision will likely define the final years of Kraft's legacy, and will shape the team for years to come.

For Bill Belichick, his next move — he said he wants to coach again — will do the same, and also determine how long it will take him to break the all-time wins record.

As for what could be next, reports have indicated that the Washington Commanders, Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders have shown interest.

If we're to read the tea leaves, it looks like the Falcons are the early front-runner for Belichick's services, despite his connection to Maryland.

The Athletic's Diana Russini has reported that the Falcons have been interested in the coach for weeks, and ESPN's Adam Schefter shared that league sources he's spoken with also belive the Falcons to be one of the team's who will pursue Belichick.

Still, at least on the Belichick front, the dust has yet to settle.

News of his departure from New England did, however, prompt statements of support and admiration from across the sporting world, from former Patriots to LeBron James.

"Coach Belichick is such a legend," James shared on X.

Tom Brady also shared a note about Belichick on Instagram.

"I’m incredibly grateful to have played for the best coach in the history of the NFL.
He was a great leader for the organization, and for all of the players who played for him. We accomplished some amazing things over a long period of time, many of which will be hard to replicate. he worked every day to help us achieve the ultimate goal, in the ultimate team sport. And, although we were successful, some of the greatest lessons I learned were in the moments where we faced the most challenging adversities. He set the tone for the organization to never falter in the face of adversity, and to do what we could do, and what was in our control, which was to go out and DO OUR JOB.
I could never have been the player I was without you Coach Belichick. I am forever grateful. And I wish you the best of luck in whatever you choose next."

Julian Edelman put it most simply: "Wouldn’t change a thing coach."
