Celebrate Earth Day with Waste Management at Patriot Place on April 22
Family-friendly event to feature touch-a-truck, activities and games to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In recognition of Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22, Patriot Place and Waste Management are teaming up to host Earth Day Extravaganza, a free event geared toward promoting fun ways people of all ages can help save the Earth.
The family-friendly event, which will be held inside the Patriot Place Activity Center between Red Robin and Capriotti’s, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature Earth Day-themed activities and games. A touch-a-truck activity will be held outside of the Activity Center between Saga Hibachi Steakhouse and Red Robin.
“As a regional mixed-use facility, we have a daily responsibility to practice sustainability through our many green initiatives and an opportunity to provide a better, cleaner environment for generations to come,” said Patriot Place General Manager Brian Earley. “We are always looking for ways to strengthen our initiatives and promote environmental awareness. Partners like Waste Management and community events like our Earth Day Extravaganza help us accomplish both.”

BUILDING PERFORMANCE / ENERGY EFFICIENCY
White roofs on all buildings facilitate heat island reduction; all roofing has a high solar reflectance index. Energy management systems are included in the commercial buildings.
SOLAR ENERGY INITIATIVES
Photovoltaic power system unveiled in 2010 generates 525 kilowatts of clean, renewable solar power at Patriot Place. Additionally, the system generates more than 625,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, supplying approximately 30 percent of Patriot Place’s power. The system will generate more than 12 million kilowatt hours of electricity over 20 years and prevent the release of more than 8,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (the equivalent of removing more than 1,600 passenger vehicles from the road for a year).
GENERATING ENERGY FROM WASTE*
In 2014, Patriot Place converted 1175.54 tons of waste into energy and diverted another 473.90 tons of materials, including paper, plastic, aluminum, glass and cardboard. These recycling efforts conserved the following resources:
- 2,822,978 KW-hrs of electricity: Enough to power 235 homes for a full year
- 37,206 gallons of oil: Enough energy to heat and cool 184 homes for a full year
- 8,745 gallons of gasoline: Enough gasoline to drive 244,863 miles
- 5,222 mature trees: Enough to produce 64,702,562 sheets of newspaper
- 2,550,660 gallons of water: Enough to meet the fresh water needs of 136.035 people for a year
- 1,746 cubic yards of landfill airspace: Enough airspace to meet the disposal needs of a community of 26,914 people

OPEN SPACE
The Nature Trail and Cranberry Bog behind Bass Pro Shops at Patriot Place, which is free and open to the public, is the only remaining operational cranberry bog in Foxborough, preserves 32 acres of wetland and offers a 1.5 mile walking trail.
Waste Management also recognized four of Patriot Place’s tenants for outstanding achievements in sustainability during a Waste, Recycling and Organics Recognition event held at the Renaissance Boston Patriot Place Hotel in February. Tavolino and Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop each were recognized for consistently exceeding organic toter capacity and being contaminant free while Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill and Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse each doubled their recycling capacities.
“Diverting more materials from landfill and being one of the first malls in the state to achieve compliance with the state’s newest waste ban item, was accomplished by the diligence and commitment by the general managers and staff with whom I have had the pleasure of working,” said Michelle Lee Guiney, Waste Management sustainability consultant. “A high volume holiday season combined with a number of NFL home games made this rollout particularly challenging, but the collaborative leadership achieved a successful landfill waste diversion program that serves as a model to replicate.”
In the first quarter of implementation of Waste Management’s Waste, Recycling and Organics, Patriot Place realized:
- 32 tons less waste generated in fourth quarter of 2014 vs. fourth quarter of 2013
- Landfill waste diversion rate increase from 26 percent in fourth quarter of 2013 to 44 percent in fourth quarter of 2014
- 768K kW-hrs of electricity were conserved, enough to power 64 homes for a year
- 90 tons of organics were diverted from landfill, reducing GHG by 82MTC02
