The author/editor of “ChristmasUnwrapped: Consumerism, Christ, and Culture”, James Tracy PhD, will be our speaker. Of the book, James Carroll writes: “Christmas Unwrapped is an illumination and a challenge, a book that can change culture and rescue our faith - in sum, a gift.” In his talk, James Tracey will offer a fascinating
accounting of how the Christmas holidays changed over the centuries.
Touching on cultural studies, theology, history, and biblical studies, he
will explore how our current holiday stories, rituals and icons (It’s a
Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Santa Claus, gift giving, holiday
concerts, and above all shopping) have become a new religion in America, the
religion of consumer capitalism. We will explore the question: where does
Jesus fit in the modern consumer holiday of Christmas?
