Despite Calls for Cuts, Foxborough School Committee Stands by Budget

The selectmen have ordered the town budget to be cut by over $531,000.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — Despite calls for cuts from members of the advisory committee and selectmen, the Foxborough School Committee has no intention of trimming their proposed budget for fiscal year 2018.

Last month, the selectmen voted 4-1 to instruct Town Manager Bill Keegan to cut $531,819 from the budget, with 60 percent of the decrease to come from the schools if it's an even across the board cut. The vote for cut came following calls from Selectman Jim DeVellis to increase property taxes by 1.25 percent, rather than 2.5 percent, the maximum allowed by state law.

Advisory committee Chairwoman Susan Dring said at a recent meeting that she is bothered by the idea that there is nothing to be cut from the schools budget, according to the Sun Chronicle.

School committee Chairwoman Tina Belanger stood by the budget, noting that the implementation of full-day kindergarten could be affected if the budget is decreased.

Residents will have a chance to vote on the budget at the Annual Town Meeting.
