Dorchester Targeted for New England Revolution Soccer Stadium

The home of the former Bayside Expo Center is the latest possible location for a stadium for the New England Revolution.

Foxborough, MA — The years-long search to bring the New England Revolution to Boston has come to Dorchester.

Sources tell the Boston Globe that team owner Robert Kraft has had discussions about potentially building a soccer stadium at the site of the former Bayside Expo Center. The University of Massachusetts owns the land and while there are active discussions between Kraft and school officials, neither side is close to an agreement.

UMass spokesman Robert Connolly confirmed in a statement that they are looking at long-term options for the property. A Kraft spokesman declined to comment.

For years, the Revolution have expressed a desire to leave Foxborough and move to a soccer specific stadium located in Boston. Currently, the team plays in Gillette Stadium with a reduced capacity between 20,000 to 25,000 for most matches.

The Dorchester plan would appear to address the team's desire to be near the highway and a public transportation station, in this case, the JFK/UMass red line and commuter rail stop. But there are challenges such as parking and likely traffic on Morrissey Boulevard and around a nearby rotary.

Previously, the team looked to Somerville and Revere to build a stadium with no success.
