Ferro Gaita is one of the biggest group's on the World Music scene. The name "Ferro Gaita" comes from the combination of two instruments, the ferro (piece of iron played with a knife) and the gaita (kind of accordion), used to play the Funaná, style of traditional music more played by this band. This style started in the 19th century with the arrival of the accordeon in Cape Verde, by the Portuguese priests, for the churches, but this instrument was taken over by the black and mulato slaves, that used him to sing their soul and their problems, motives that led it to be forbidden in public places until the independence in 1975.
In 2002 the band was nominated to the Kora Awards (biggest prize in African music) as best traditional band. In 2007 the band was given a cultural medal by the government and was given was honored by the minister of culture of Cape Verde, for cultural services. The band has performed on various stages all across the globe. This new American tour is in support of the release of their new album "Cidade Velha".

Today, CORDAS DO SOL represents the most vibrant band in Cape Verde music scene. From the mountain Island of Santo Anton, Cordas do Sol brings the rich traditional story-telling style and sound of the islands to North America. Cordas do Sol new album, “Lume na Lenha”, “Fire on Wood” captures the island living essence. The band was able to restore rhythms and chants long forgotten from the rural setting of Santo Anton. These trpocical rhythms paint a very colorful picture of life on the islands and represents the history of one of the largest immigrant groups in New England.
Cordas do Sol won a CAPE VERDE MUSICAL AWARDS 2011 (CVMA) for Best Band and song of the year “Meninos de rua”, “Street kids”. The group is currently on a world tour and they have been enjoying success in every major festival in Cape Verde, in Europe and in the African Diasporas. They have travel to Portugal, Spain, France, Holland, Luxemburg, China and the reception has been extraordinary.
