Foxboro Man Targets Immigrants In $152K Mortgage Fraud Scheme: AG
Nuhu Mohammed, of Foxborough, was accused of stealing more than $152,000, mostly from immigrants, in a mortgage fraud scheme.
FOXBOROUGH, MA — A Foxborough man was indicted after prosecutors said he ran a mortgage fraud scheme that largely targeted immigrant families. Nuhu Mohammed, 60, was arrested Thursday after Stoughton police referred the case to the Attorney General's office.
According to the Attorney General's office, Mohammed pretended to be a mortgage broke or layer and promised people he could help them secure mortgages or loan modifications. Prosecutors said Mohammed stole $152,333 from clients, many who were at risk of foreclosure, but didn't provide any meaningful assistance in securing the mortgages or loans.
Mohammed also tried to hide that he wasn't helping his clients by requesting they forward all letters between clients and loan service companies to him and asked them not to open the letters, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said one family lost two properties to foreclosure because of Mohammed's actions. Every client lost significant amounts of money.
According to the Attorney General's office, Mohammed primarily targeted immigrant families and exploited their lack of mortgage finance knowledge and that they didn't know much English.

Prosecutors said Mohammed also used his clients' personal information to open two credit cards in their name.
Mohammed was was charged with 10 counts of larceny, forgery, uttering, two counts of identity fraud, four counts of false material statements or ommissions during or in connect with mortgage lending process, two counts of fraudulent use of credit cards and common and notorious thief.
He was arraigned in Norfolk Superior Court and was held on $50,000 bail. Mohammed was ordered not to contact any of his former clients if he posts bail. He is scheduled to return to court Nov. 15.
