Foxborough Group Works to Support Special Needs

The Foxborough Special Education Parent Advisory Council was the topic of the latest Teaching and Learning Highlights.

The following was submitted by Foxborough Assistant Superintendent AmyBerdos as part of the school committee’s Teaching and Learning Highlight Series.

The Foxborough Special Education Parent Advisory Council (FSEPAC) was the topic of the Teaching and Learning Highlight at the last school committee meeting. A requirement under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act and Massachusetts Special Education Regulations, parent advisory councils promote and support families of children with special needs. SEPAC’s President, Ms. Erin Bose and Vice President Ms. Michelle Thackston were present to highlight the mission and goals of the group and to encourage parents and guardians of children who receive special education services to join the FSEPAC.

The mission of FSEPAC is “to work towards the understanding, respect, support and appropriate education for all children with special education needs in our community.” Ms. Bose and Ms. Thackston discussed the importance of providing a network and support system to parents and guardians of special needs students. They shared how the group works to provide a forum where information and resources can be shared relative to the areas and processes of special education. Their goals include providing outreach and support to members of the community and a support network for its members which includes providing regular forums for parents to share information and discuss pertinent issues. Keeping up with legislative changes and learning about topics of interest and available resources are provided through meetings, workshops and presentations.
