Foxborough Hanging Purple Heart Signs Throughout Town

Foxborough will put up "Purple Heart town" signs at entry ways into town to honor local veterans who've earned the honor.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — Five years ago, Foxborough was officially declared a "Purple Heart town," a distinction designed to honor any veterans living in town who received the award while serving. And soon, the town will honor those residents by erecting dozens of street signs throughout Foxborough, showing the town's pride for the designation.

Ally Rodriguez, Foxborough's veteran services, officer asked the selectmen to approve help purchasing and installing the signs at its meeting last Tuesday.

"Our community has a proud history of military service, and members of our community have been awarded the purple heart as a result of being wounded or killed in any action against the enemy of the United States ...," Rodriquez said. "These signs are the next step because with this proclamation, nobody knows about it ... We have a lot of Purple Heart recipients, some of whom are still alive and residing in Foxborough."

Rodriquez asked that a sign be installed at 12 of Foxborough's 30 entry points. The cost of the project is estimated to be $1,000. She said she'd like the town to pay for the signs but fundraising is an option if necessary. Selectman Chris Mitchell said a local organization, Foxboro Never Forgets, agreed to purchase the signs and they will be installed by the town's highway department.
