Substitute teachers in Foxborough are about to get a bump in pay for a day’s worth of work.

Monday night, the school committee voted 5-0 to increase the daily pay of substitute teachers. A sub without a college degree will receive a $5 raise for a daily salary of $70 with an additional i$5 increase after 15 days of work, a substitute with a Bachelor’s degree will go from $75 to $80, and a certified teacher will now make $85, a $10 raise.

Intermediate teachers who are on a long-term assignment will make $50 a day and there will be no increase for long term subs over 90 days, who are paid at step 2 on the teacher’s pay scale.

According to Superintendent Debra Spinelli, the raise is the first for substitute teachers in seven years.

“Given the minimum wage is going up in December and it is a seven-hour day, $75 isn’t that much. We thought this was the time to consider this,” she said.

According to Business Manager Bill Yukna, the raise will increase the budget for substitute teachers by $20,000.

In researching the raise, Spinelli said she looked at over 30 school districts to compare the pay.

“It does fill a much-needed gap when we have teachers who are absent if we have a retired teacher who can step in it’s worth the extra dollars,” committee member Tina Belanger said.
