Foxborough Vigil Remembers 9/11 Victims

The community came together Sunday night in memory of Foxborough resident Michael McGinty and the 3,000 people who lost their lives.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — There was no formal program, just candles and names at the center of town.

Sunday evening, the Foxboro Jaycees held a 9/11 remembrance ceremony. As part of the tribute to the victims on the 15th anniversary of the attacks, residents took part in a candlelight vigil at the common while the names of the 3,000 people killed in the attack scrolled across a screen on the bandstand.

“Remembering that day is not a choice it’s an obligation,” Foxboro Jaycee Bob Gillis said. “Watch (the names), look at them, and remember.”

Cindy McGinty, whose husband Michael died in the attack, was the only speaker, giving brief remarks at the beginning of the vigil. She recalled working on a project inside Bethany Church when she found out about the attack that took her husband's life.

“I often think Foxborough is the reason why I can stand in front of you,” she said.

McGinty called on those in attendance to not only remembered what happened on Sept. 11, but on the days that followed.

“9/11 is a national day of service and remembrance. What that means is we need to remember not just the bad things that happened that day but the days when we came together and did nice things,” she said, recalling all the support she received, including one person who cut her lawn for eight years, only stopping when she moved out of town.

“Remember people like Mike McGinty and the 3,000 names on that screen. All of them have a story. Teach your children what it means to be a part of a community,” she said. “Don’t be angry, turn it around on them because that’s how you make sure the terrorists don’t win on that day.”
