Gov. Baker Says Revolution Stadium in Dorchester 'Could be Really Terrific'

Talks to bring the MLS team to Dorchester are ongoing, the governor said.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — The proposal to build a MLS soccer stadium at the site of the Bayside Expo Center could have a supporter in Gov. Charlie Baker.

Baker told Shirley Leung of the Boston Globe that the opportunity to move the New England Revolution to Boston could be terrific.

“It could be great for all the kids who play soccer," he said.

The Dorchester plan is the latest proposal in the decade-long effort to move the soccer team from Gillette Stadium to a soccer specific stadium closer to Boston. A move would have to involve the University of Massachusetts, who owns the land, offering a lease to the Kraft family, with the Krafts paying for a $250 million stadium with the capacity to hold 20,000 to 25,000 fans.

Baker added that the conversations are ongoing and many significant issues remain.

Among the issues is Kosciuszko Circle, located at the top of Morrissey Boulevard. The price to turn the rotary into an intersection could cost $120 million, or $220 million with bypass roads.

The Revs remain one of six teams in the league that does not play in a soccer specific stadium. Of those six, D.C. United is in the process of building their own home and Orlando City SC will leave Camping World Stadium next season for their new grounds.
