How Ed Sheeran Helped Bring Coldplay to Gillette Stadium

Tuesday, the selectmen approved the license for the July 30 concert.

Foxborough, MA – If not for a special appearance at Ed Sheeran’s Gillette Stadium show last September, Coldplay might be performing under a different sky full of stars next month.

During the hearing for Coldplay’s Foxborough stop on the Head Full of Dreams tour, stadium representative Jeremie Smith told the board that conversations to bring Coldplay to Foxborough began after the band’s lead singer Chris Martin performed two songs with Sheeran. Following the performance, Martin began to talk with stadium officials about the tour and a possible stop at Gillette Stadium,

“One thing led to another and before you know it, Chris was shaking hands on a deal to play here,” Smith told the selectmen Tuesday. “Obviously, the band is excited to play here and we are excited to have them.”

Smith told the board that Coldplay attracts an older and more mature crowd with an age range of 25-55. In a letter to the board, Chief Ed O’Leary said he does not expect for there to be any major issues with the audience.
