Media Denied Video of Chandler Jones at Police Station

The Secretary of State's office has cited privacy grounds as the reason for the denial.

FOXBOROUGH, MA - A denied public records request for surveillance footage of New England Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones at the Foxborough Public Safety building during a January incident has been upheld by the office of Secretary of State William Galvin.

CommonWealth Magazine reports that the Boston Herald and NECN filed requests for the video but were denied on privacy grounds. An appeal was made to Galvin’s office but was also rejected this month.

“Disclosure of the responsive video recording would result in embarrassment to an individual of normal sensibilities,” Supervisor of Public Records Shawn Williams wrote. “I find [Jones’s] privacy interest in this matter outweighs the public’s interest in disclosure.”

On Jan. 10, Jones appeared outside the police portion of the building seeking medical help. According to a police report, Jones was escorted to the front lot to be evaluated by medical crews. He was later taken to Norwood Hospital and released.

While the report does not say what caused the incident, Chris Gasper of the Boston Globe reported at the time that it was caused by a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana. An officer on dispatch audio at Jones’ home can be heard stating that a Class D delta, often used to describe marijuana, was involved.

While town officials argued that releasing the video would encroach on the privacy rights of those who came to the police station for medical help, Media attorney Robert Ambrogi said the decision represents a broad interpretation of the privacy exception.

Jones was never charged with any crimes.
