Names Needed for Foxborough Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial

Veterans Service Agent Michael Johns gave the selectmen an update on the project Tuesday.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — This year’s Veterans Day ceremony will have extra meaning for those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Veterans Service Agent Michael Johns told the selectmen Tuesday that he is hoping to have the ribbon cutting ceremony for the town’s Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial prior to the town's Veterans Day program. The new memorial is slated to be constructed between the World War 1 and World War 2 memorials on the town common.

What is needed is the name of Foxborough residents who have served in the most recent conflicts.

“That may sound peculiar coming from the veterans agent but not all servicemen come back to Foxborough and if they don’t come back, I don’t get notice of their return,” Johns said.

To be included on the memorial, a serviceperson must come from Foxborough and complete their full term of service.

On the fundraising front, $27,000 of the $60,000 goal has been raised. No tax money is being used on the memorial. Donation checks can be mailed to Foxborough Town Hall and made out to Foxborough Veterans Service, with Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial on the memo line.

Johns also said the names of Foxborough residents who served during the Cold War will be added to the Korean War/Vietnam War Memorial.

If you know the name of a serviceperson from Foxborough who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, you can email their information to Johns at mjohns@foxboroughma.gov or call 508-543-1204.
