Report on Plainville Crash Finds Breached Crankcase, Punctured Holes in Plane

The findings come from a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board.

A preliminary investigation of a plane that crashed into Plainville home indicates that the plane had a breached crankcase, two punctured holes near a cylinder between the left and right magnetos, and the oil sump was fractured and partially melted away.

The report, released by the National Transportation Safety Board, also says that the plane’s left rudder cable and the left aileron cable turnbuckle exhibited overload fractures. The right flap actuator was consistent with the right wing flap in the retracted position

In June, a plane from Pennsylvania traveling to Norwood Memorial Airport in Norwood crashed into a Plainville home after the pilot stated to an air traffic control tower that he was having engine problems. The pilot was advised to attempt to head towards the highway, but the plane was unable to make it.

According to the report, several witnesses heard an airplane engine before stopping or going silent. They could not see the plane due to the low cloud ceiling. One witness across the street described the noise as a “low moan buzzing sound” and saw the plane over the trees near his property. He described the plane’s travel as “wobbling” in a straight line before losing sight of the plane and hearing a boom seconds later.

The airplane would crash into the corner of the Bridle Path home. All three passengers aboard the plane did not survive.
