New England Patriots Cornerback Darrell Revis to Become Free Agent

The Patriots' cornerback will test free agency according to ESPN.

Arguably the most important part of the 2014 Patriots’ defense will become a free agent at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

A source tells ESPN that the Patriots have declined the option on Darrell Revis’ contract, allowing him to test the free agent market.

The Patriots will still be able to re-sign Revis, but other teams will also be allowed to make offers to the cornerback.

Originally believed to be signed to a two-year contract, Patriots’ president Jonathan Kraft later admitted that the 2015 season was a “placeholder,” referring to a $25 million salary cap charge the team was unlikely to absorb.

Coming to the Patriots in 2014, Revis established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL only two years after injuring his ACL. A shutdown corner, quarterbacks averaged a rating of only 67.9 when throwing towards Revis.
