Police Chief William Baker Era Starts in Foxborough

The town held a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony for their new police chief Thursday.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — Perhaps the scene of a police chief swearing-in ceremony taking place in the shadow of an NFL stadium is one of the best metaphors for Foxborough as a small town with a big attraction.

On a beautiful fall day with town officials, family, police, firefighters, and more present, Foxborough Police Chief William Baker was sworn-in to his new position during a ceremony at the Renaissance Hotel at Patriot Place. Baker is now Foxborough's first new police chief since 1985. He beat out 75 other candidates from 21 states and two continents, along with four finalists.

"I can tell you that the four finalists were some of the best candidates I have seen," Town Manager Bill Keegan said.

"Foxborough is a town that's all about winning. Let me tell you, you have won today," she said. "I am confident that Baker has the ethics and skills to guide the police department and the professionalism and experience to protect the town and those that visit for the games."

In a letter to Chief Baker, Gov. Baker said, "Your expertise in law enforcement is broad and deep and I know you'll have a chance to draw on that in your new challenge. Whether it's a concert or Patriots game, I have no doubt that all will enjoy their time in your town safely."

At the end ceremony, Baker said he knew he picked the right place after observing the department's response to Tuesday's night incident which involved a person barricading themselves inside a residence.

"I saw officers act with compassion to save a life, which they did. That's when I knew I was home," he said, "I will give you my best effort to make this little corner of the world better for everyone to live and work in."

Baker has been on the job since Monday. He was officially sworn in Monday but Thursday's swearing-in the ceremonial start to his tenure in Foxborough.
