Police Say High School Student Pressured Boyfriend into Committing Suicide

Former King Philip student Michelle Carter faces an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Michelle Carter of Plainville knew the texts she sent to her boyfriend last July could come back to haunt her when she expressed her fears to a friend. The texts, found by investigators, allege that the former King Philip High School students encouraged her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III to commit suicide.

Tragically, that is what Roy did last summer, taking his life in the parking lot of a Kmart with a gas-powered water pump according to the Washington Post.

Prosecutors say that Carter pressured her boyfriend to take his own life for about a week before committing the act. In damaging texts published in the Sun Chronicle, Carter said to Roy, “You can’t think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don’t get why you aren’t.”

Roy responded: “I don’t get it either. I don’t know.”

Carter: “So I guess you aren’t gonna do it then. All that for nothing. I’m just confused. Like you were so ready and determined.”

Roy: “I am gonna eventually. I really don’t know what I’m waiting for but I have everything lined up.”

Carter: “No, you’re not, Conrad. Last night was it. You kept pushing it off and you say you’ll do it, but you never do. It’s always gonna be that way if you don’t take action. You’re just making it harder on yourself by pushing it off. You just have to do it.”

Prosecutors say that on the night of his death, Roy left the truck and called Carter because he was scared and the carbon monoxide was taking effect. Carter allegedly told Roy to get back in the truck.

The texts were only a few of the 1,000 texts police found between the two. Police discovered multiple texts to Roy indicating that Carter was communicating with him up to his death.

After Roy’s death, Carter reportedly attempted to organize a softball tournament in memory of Roy and posted on social media about how she missed Roy with several messages about suicide prevention according to CBS News

Carter, who was indicted on February and arraigned in New Bedford Juvenile Court on an involuntary manslaughter charge, will be back in court on Oct. 2. A lawyer for Carter has asked Judge Bettina Border to dismiss the charges, arguing that his client was “brainwashed” into assisting Roy with his plan to take his own life.

Carter is free on $2,500 bail and will be tried as an adult.
