Tom Brady's Backup's Backup is Now Injured: Report

Jacoby Brissett reportedly has a torn right thumb ligament. Does that make Julian Edelman the quarterback?

FOXBOROUGH, MA — Patriots fans might want to start asking who is fourth on the Patriots' quarterback depth chart.

A source tells Mike Petragli of WEEI that quarterback Jacoby Brissett suffered a torn right thumb ligament during the second half of Thursday night's game against the Houston Texans. Surgery is likely for stabilization.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network also confirmed an injury for Brissett, calling it a thumb sprain that is not serious, but the team is monitoring it and is weighing the quarterback's options.

Thursday night, Brissett went 11-19 for 103 yards and 48 yards rushing with a touchdown.

Between a suspended Tom Brady, an injured Jimmy Garoppolo, and the most recent injury, the Patriots could have no available quarterbacks. This week, the team reportedly worked out T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree but signed neither.

Receiver Julian Edelman, a quarterback in college, was the emergency QB for Thursday night's game.

The good news is that the Patriots have a long week before their next game, an Oct. 2 showdown against the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium.

Brady, suspended for his role on the Deflategate scandal, is eligible to return in Week 5 for New England's game on Sunday, Oct. 9, against the Cleveland Browns.
