The Friends of Camp St. Augustine Disband After Shift in Fund Control

The decision to disband came after the board of recreation moved to take control of the group's funds.

Checks for the refund of current dues were mailed out this week after The Friends of Camp St. Augustine (FOCAS) in Foxborough recently voted to disband their organization.

The decision to disband came after the board of recreation moved to take control of the group's funds based on advice from Foxborough's town manager, Kevin Paicos.

According to Paicos, by law, it is illegal for FOCAS to maintain revenue that is generated on town-owned property.

The Chapel Meeting House, previously managed by the FOCAS, is currently being run by the Recreation Department.

FOCSA was originally initiated as a grassroots group whose purpose was to save the St. Augustine Camp from development in 2003. FOCAS efforts were awarded when the town decided to purchase 20 acres of the former camp property.

The Chapel Meeting House was built on the camp property in 1913 and at the time was dedicated as the "Turnbull Chapel." Since that time, FOCSA along with community support, successfully completed three phases of renovation on their beloved chapel.

Today, the chapel is utilized as a "meeting house" for public and/or private functions.
