Turf Field Lights, Better Tech for Security Cameras Among Foxborough Schools Capital Improvement Items

The schools will also look for funding for new school buses and a copier.

New lights at Sam Berns Community Field and more funding for the district-wide security camera system are just two of the five items featured in the Foxborough Public Schools’ 2015-16 capital improvement plan.

Citing network capability needs, the school district will ask for more funding for cameras in the schools. Business manager Bill Yukna told the Foxborough School Committee last week that a the town’s network was not capable of streaming the data from the camera, leading to an upgrade of the fiber network.

According to Yukna, the cameras will cover the main areas with the possibility of more in the future if it is decided there is a need.

Continuing with the next phase of the turf field project, the lights for Berns Community Field at the high school is estimated to cost $164,000. Sam’s parents, Scott Berns and Leslie Gordon, have obtained a discount from Musco lighting, bringing the cost of the lights down by 50 percent.

“At that level of discount for one of the best products, we would be taking advantage of the lighting like we did with the NFL grant,” Yukna said.

Superintendent Debra Spinelli said she is talking with the athletic boosters on possible fundraising efforts for the concession stands, which is considered to be the next phase of the project.

Other capital improvement items include $175,000 in computer and network upgrades, $150,000 to purchase two new school busses, and $40,000 for a new copier at the high school.
