Q: When did the business start?
A: Sturm Lawn & Landscaping Services was founded in 1986 by Frank J. Sturm. In the early 1990s, the company began to concentrate more on treating and managing residential and commercial lawns and working with local and trusted landscapers to help with other landscaping needs. At this time, the company’s name was changed to Turf Pro.

Q: Where did your father, Frank J. Sturm, get the idea for the business?
A: After working in leadership positions with other companies, Frank J. Sturm tried his hand in something different, landscaping. Twenty-six years after Frank founded Turf Pro, he still holds that same passion for his work.
"As his son, I can certainly say I am proud of what he was and is still able to accomplish," said Frank D. Sturm. "He wants customers to understand how to use pesticides and fertilizer properly to help their lawns grow, while still protecting the surrounding environment.
Q: What kind of services do you provide?
A: Turf Pro provides the following for residential and commercial properties: A free quote to go along with services such as: early and late spring feeding with crabgrass control, summer feeding with grub control, fall feeding with pelletized lime and winterizer. Turf Pro also includes broadleaf weed control and surface insect control. You will also receive free service calls, consultations and visits.
Q: What are some of the key steps someone would take to properly care for their lawn?
A: A few of the key aspects to maintaining a proper lawn, at any time of the year, is watering and mowing properly, aerating and dethatching when necessary and applying the proper amount of fertilizer, lime and, if necessary, chemicals to dispel diseases and noxious weeds.
An interesting myth most people do not know is that their lawn may need different amounts of water at different times of the year. Blanketing your entire lawn with the same amount of water for any given amount of time during the day may prove to be ineffective and hurtful to your grass’ health. Turf Pro can advise customers on how to water their lawn properly.
Q: What separates Turf Pro from other lawn care companies?
A: Like many companies, Turf Pro has always tried to focus on satisfying its customers. However, we truly believe this is what drives our business. Many of Turf Pro’s customers have been with us for well over three years, with some going as far back as when the company started in the mid 1980s.
Turf Pro also focuses on reducing the use of pesticides it uses. We do not blanket lawns with pesticides at each visit and instead, focus on helping lawns grow thick and healthy. Mostly we spot spray weeds when we visit (and come back as soon as possible when requested), as well as use crab grass and grub control.
Q: With fall a month away, any tips to take care of your lawn during the fall and winter?
A: The fall is the best time for people to aerate, dethatch and seed (or reseed) their lawns, if necessary. Also, fall clean ups are extremely important to maintaining a healthy lawn because leaves left on the lawn over the winter can mat down and smother the grass.
Q: What’s in the future for Turf Pro?
A: Although we would love to continue to expand our presence in the community we have grown up in, our number one goal is first to satisfy our current customers. They have taken a moment out of their day to sign on with us and with their vote of confidence, it is up to us to develop and keep their trust by producing extraordinary results.
We would also like to continue to educate everyone on how they can properly take care of their lawn. As licensed professionals, we cannot just be business people. We must be educators who want to satisfy our customers and help protect the environment from improper lawn-care and landscaping practices.
