Watch Out For Scammers Targeting Mailboxes: Foxborough Police
Foxborough police said thieves targeted standalone collection boxes and used makeshift devices to steal checks, money orders and gift cards.
FOXBOROUGH, MA — Police have asked the public to be on the look out for mailbox fishing after investigating several check fraud incidents over the past few weeks. According to police, the thieves targeted standalone collection boxes and used makeshift devices to "fish" out the letters.
"The bait they seek in these letters typically includes checks, money orders, gift cards, or any type of personal or financial information," police said in a statement. "Chemicals are then used to alter the information on these documents which are then cashed by the suspects."
Police said the most effective way to protect yourself against mailbox fishing is send mail using the bins at the post office. The thieves have mostly targeted the collection boxes at night, so police suggest to send letters out only during hours the post office is open. It is also a good idea for residents to keep an eye on their bank statements.
