2 Broken Rails Delayed Framingham-Worcester MBTA Trains

Recent warm-to-freezing temperatures may have caused the two separate breaks, according to Keolis.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — Tuesday's commuter rail commute was delayed due to two separate incidents involving broken rails, according to the company that operates MBTA commuter rail.

The first break was detected at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday just east of the Framingham station. Trains had to switch to a single track between West Natick and Wellesley due to the breakage.

The second break occurred around 9 a.m. near Westborough. That break forced trains to operate on a single track between Grafton and Westborough.

The breaks — and ensuing train traffic due to single-track operations — delayed departures by up to 20 minutes up and down the Framingham-Worcester line, according to the MBTA.

A spokesperson for Keolis, the company that operates and maintains commuter rail system, said the breaks might be due to big temperature swings recently. Temperatures were near zero around sunrise on Tuesday morning, down from temperatures in the 50s on Saturday, and in the 20s on Sunday.
