23 MA School Districts In Need Of Support: MCAS 2019 Results

Twenty-three school districts across Massachusetts need targeted assistance and support, according to the results from the accountability system rolled out Tuesday with the 2019 MCAS results. This is the second year the state has implemented the accountability system and the number of districts needing support has slightly declined — last year 30 districts were classified as needing support.

State education officials said the accountability system is "more comprehensive than the previous system." It takes into account more than just test scores, considering student achievement, student growth, high school completion, English proficiency, chronic absenteeism, and advanced coursework.

For the third year, the commissioner is holding the names of the new underperforming and chronically underperforming schools, and will release them later in the school year. Officials said he is taking time to "gather more information about district-level factors influencing school performance." Under the new system, two schools exited "Underperforming School" status.

Three districts - Lawrence, Southbridge, and Holyoke - were classified as in need of broad/comprehensive support. These three districts were also under the same designation last year. The other 20 districts were classified as in need of focused/targeted support.
