Celebration Returns At Party City, Thanks To Framingham Company

A deal with Staples has resulted in a wider Massachusetts footprint for Party City, which closed its hundreds of stores last year.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — Thanks to a local company, a celebration supplier that last year closed all of its more than 800 retail stores, including 20 in Massachusetts, is celebrating once again.

Framingham-based Staples Inc. is now adding Party City in-store outposts at 700 Staples branches nationwide, according to a news release.

The partnership provides a larger Massachusetts footprint for Party City, a private, New Jersey-based company that filed for bankruptcy – its second – in December 2024. The retailer shut down its branches a few months later.

Under new ownership, Party City is now selling balloons, decor, gift bags and other gala goods at 46 Staples locations across the Bay State, according to the Staples website. They range from Great Barrington in western Massachusetts to Falmouth, Hyannis and Orleans on the Cape. (See list below.)

Staples has more than 60 stores in Massachusetts. So far, the store in hometown Framingham doesn’t have a Party City presence, but Staples has said it plans to expand the partnership to all Staples locations by the end of this year.

The team-up between Staples and Party City has been in the works for a couple of months – the Massachusetts company, also private, tried out the collaboration in markets including Connecticut, Patch reported.

But the announcement last week marks the national rollout.

“Staples has always been focused on making things easy for our customers, and our partnership with Party City takes that promise into new territory,” said Marshall Warkentin, president of Staples U.S. Retail.

“By bringing Party City into Staples stores, we’re expanding what customers can accomplish in one place.”
