ASHLAND, MA — A big change is coming to one of the few state-run coronavirus testing sites in the region.

Starting Jan. 3, the drive-up PCR testing site at the Ashland commuter rail station will switch to appointment-only. The site has been swamped in recent weeks with local residents seeking tests before the holidays, and amid a surge in coronavirus cases linked to the omicron variant.

The testing site will also have new hours starting Monday: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There are two other state-run sites in the area: The drive-up site run by Marlborough Hospital at the New England Sports Center, which is open 8 a.m. to noon on weekdays; and the walk-up site in Framingham at St. Tarcisius Parish, which is by appointment-only.
