Hot tubs have many benefits both for healthy people and those seeking relief from ailments such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. The warm water, the soothing massage and the relaxing motion are enjoyable for almost anybody. While most of these benefits are obvious, one of the greatest ones may be overlooked.
Not everyone has heard of it, but we've all done it. That special relaxing and invigorating feeling you get when you walk barefoot in the grass or on the beach. Your body is “Earthing”, meaning it is in physical contact with the Earth. Now we are discovering that this connection with the Earth may bring health benefits that we'd never imagined.
Sure, it sounds like a far-out concept, but the effect is really quite simple; physically connecting with the Earth may help bring our bodies into tune.
We've all heard of 'free radicals' and the need to battle them with 'anti-oxidants' to stave off disease and aging. Free radicals are the by-products of our life processes and can't be avoided, but there are ways to fight the damage they can cause. Avoiding the sun, cigarettes and processed foods are a few, but there are other steps we can take to combat damage to our cells that cause disease by reducing inflammation.
Science knows that just about everything that exists has an electrical charge, including free radicals, which have a positive charge. The Earth itself has a negative charge. Just as the spark built up by dragging your feet on the carpet discharges when you touch an object, the buildup of positively charged free radicals may be reduced by grounding to the negatively charged Earth. Studies are showing that 'Earthing' or 'grounding' as it is sometimes called, can be effective in discharging that damaging buildup. You can even buy a bed sheet that is grounded to the third prong of your electrical outlet that you sleep on to discharge this energy.
Electricians and spa technicians know that a hot tub's metal heater, and therefore its water, are grounded to your home's electrical system. Immersing your body in hot tub water should have the effect of Earthing, aiding in the neutralization of free-radicals. This scientifically backed theory may show us that there are benefits to using a hot tub regularly that we never realized.
So if you're feeling uneasy and need to get grounded, it may mean literally! Go barefoot whenever you can and take an extra soak in that hot tub!
