Notice Of Hydrant Flushing: Improving Water Quality

FRAMINGHAM - The City of Framingham is committed to maintaining high-quality water for all residents. As part of this effort, the Water Division will soon begin its Hydrant Flushing Program. This routine maintenance improves the performance of the water system and ensures residents have access to clean, safe drinking water. Please take note of the important details below.

What’s Happening?

• The Hydrant Flushing Program will begin on Monday, September 23, 2024, and continue through November 1, 2024.
• Areas involved include neighborhoods from Waverly Street (Ashland town line) to Beaver Street (Natick town line).
• Flushing will occur between 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. to minimize inconvenience.
• The program will progress in phases to limit impacts on water quality and service.

Why is Hydrant Flushing Important?

• Hydrant flushing is essential for maintaining drinking water quality and ensuring the longevity of the water system.
• It helps remove natural sediment buildup from water mains, delivering cleaner water to residents.

Temporary Impacts You Might Notice

• You may experience reduced water pressure while flushing is in progress.
• Discolored water is possible due to dissolved iron, but the EPA confirms this is not a health hazard.
• The Water Division will monitor water quality and pressure to ensure minimal disruption.

Should You Take Precautions?

• Most residents don’t need to take any special actions.
• However, hospitals, medical facilities, and businesses using water in manufacturing should keep an eye on water quality and pressure during the program.
