Framingham Not Seeking State Funds For World Cup Events: Report

The city of Framingham has said no thanks to Massachusetts grants that would pay for local celebrations around the soccer tournament.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — While the state is offering cities millions of dollars to host celebrations around the FIFA World Cup, Framingham has said no thanks.

Mayor Charlie Sisitsky told WBTS-TV 10 the city opted not to apply for any event grants, due to concerns about public safety and uncertainty about the funding.

Some local fans feel frustrated, the television station reported. That’s especially true because of soccer’s global appeal and the diverse nationalities of Framingham residents.

Statewide, 25 communities and organizations have received grants to hold World Cup-related events and watch parties.

The mayor noted that there’s no restriction on privately held events during the tournament.
