FRAMINGHAM, MA — A number of eighth-grade students at Fuller Middle School will focus on science and engineering on Thursday for a special event organized by Framingham Public Schools and Eversource.

On Thursday, more than 40 eighth-grade students from Fuller Middle School will team up and compete in science experiments that apply heating and cooling concepts similar to those used in a first-in-the-nation networked geothermal pilot program, which is being built in the neighborhood near Fuller Middle School, officials said.

All of this is part of what the district is calling "Introduce a Girl to Engineering and Science" Day.

"Encouraging each of our students to follow their passion is part of our everyday work as educators and through partnerships like this, we’re able to introduce our students to the many real-world opportunities that exist in the STEM field," said Fuller Middle School Principal Kerry Wood.

"It’s exciting to see how many of our girls immediately jumped at the chance to take part in this event and we’re hoping they come away inspired by the stories they hear."

Women engineers and scientists from Eversource will serve as mentors for the students, share their experiences in STEM-related fields and encourage students to explore everything STEM has to offer, officials said.

"We’re thrilled to partner with Framingham Schools and are excited to have so many successful women in STEM careers join us to talk about their experiences and encourage these bright young girls to explore future STEM opportunities," said Eversource Vice President for Clean Technologies Nikki Bruno.

"Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM positions, so the more that girls can hear the stories of successful women pursuing their passion in science, technology, engineering, and math careers, the more likely we’ll be to have an increased number of women working in these important disciplines (areas) in the future."
