Framingham State Student Newspaper Honored With Society Of Professional Journalists Awards

Opinions editor McKenzie Ward and news editor Sophia Harris both won first place in their respective categories.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham State University's independent student newspaper, The Gatepost, garnered a number of honors in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence contest.

The paper and its journalists received four awards in Region 1 of the contest.

Opinions editor McKenzie Ward won first place for general column writing while news editor Sophia Harris won first place for general news reporting for "small schools", or those with less than 10,000 students.

Associate editor Emily Rosenberg was a finalist in the small school category for feature writing.

Additionally, the paper as a whole was nominated as a finalist for the Corbin Gwaltney Award for Best All-Around Student Newspaper, one of only two papers nominated in the category.

The SPJ said national winners will be notified in the late spring and will be recognized at the SPJ’s 2023 convention in Las Vegas, Sept. 28-30
