Framingham Taking Steps To Replace McCarthy Roof

Roof leaks could be a thing of the past if the district's MSBA application is approved.

FRAMINGHAM, MA-Framingham's School Committee is taking steps to replace parts of McCarthy Elementary's roof at a lower cost.

The School Committee unanimously voted to submit an application for McCarthy's roof replacement to the Massachusetts School Building Authority's (MSBA) Accelerated Repair Program at last Wednesday's meeting.

The section of the McCarthy roof in question is 20-years-old and just made the cut for MSBA reimbursement. If the application is approved, 56 percent of the $1 million replacement will be covered by MSBA. The remainder of the cost would be covered by the FY21 Capitol Budget, through a request to the city.

The Accelerated Repair Program specifically focuses on roofs, windows/doors, and/or boilers. The program focuses the preservation of existing assets by performing energy-efficient and cost-saving upgrades, which will result in direct operational savings for districts.

McCarthy may not be the last roof to be upgraded in the district. "It will be the first of many roofs to come," Matthew Torti, Framingham Public School's Director of Buildings and Grounds, said. The warranties on seven other school buildings were extended by five years this past summer, but Torti said that isn't enough. "There are those roofs that are in immediate need and I would say we want to be proactive in this program," Torti said. He added that there are ongoing roof leaks at almost all of the Framingham schools.
