Framingham Department of Public Works To Conduct Water Main Flushing for 4-6 Weeks

FRAMINGHAM – Starting April 22, 2024, Framingham Department of Public Works will begin water main flushing in the City of Framingham.

The Water Department will begin in section B1, which is the Southwest corner of the City and will flush mains in all five zones over the next four to six weeks. (See map below)

The flushing process may cause discolored water and a reduction in pressure.

The discoloration of the water will be temporary and is not harmful.

If the condition persists, please contact the Framingham Water Division. The Water Division appreciates your patience as it works to improve the quality of drinking water provided to residents and businesses in Framingham.

What are the benefits of flushing water mains?

Water main flushing is an effective method of improving drinking water quality and is an integral component of a water utility’s distribution system maintenance program.

Are there any short-term adverse impacts from water main flushing?

Water main flushing can cause temporary reductions in water pressure and discolored water from increased levels of dissolved iron. Discolored water due to increased levels of dissolved iron may not be aesthetically pleasing, but according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it is not a public health threat. The City of Framingham Water Department is making every effort to minimize potential impacts from the program and will closely monitor water quality and water pressure while flushing mains.

Should City of Framingham customers take special precautions?

In general, customers do not have to take any special precautions.

However, some customers, such as hospital and medical facilities, and businesses that use water in their manufacturing or cleaning process, may want to more closely monitor their water quality and water pressure while the City of Framingham flushing program is underway.
