Framingham's First Black Police Officer Dies At 78

FRAMINGHAM, MA — A former Framingham police officer who was the first Black person to join the department died last week at age 78.

Daniel Louis Giro died Jan. 9 at his home in Oriental, North Carolina, Framingham police announced in a Facebook post Thursday. Giro retired from the department in 1999.

Giro, a Framingham native, joined the town police department in the late 1960s after serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was also the department's first horse-mounted officer, and the first Black motorcycle officer.

After retiring, Giro worked as the director of a recreational center in western Massachusetts before moving to North Carolina.
