Framingham's Spicer Pulls Papers for Mayoral Run

FRAMINHAM, MA - Framingham's Dr. Yvonne Spicer announced Wednesday that she has pulled nomination papers to run in a bid to become the soon-to-be city's first mayor.

Spicer is a Framingham Town Meeting Member in precinct 6, serving on the Standing Committee on Ways and Means. She has lived in Framingham since 1985.

“I am proud to step up to run for mayor at this critical point in Framingham’s future,” said Spicer in a release. “I would be honored to be the People’s Mayor - unifying our community and working with residents, businesses and the outstanding team of municipal professionals to develop and implement a strategic plan that upholds our core values while facilitating smart growth.”

Spicer started in Framingham teaching at Farley Middle School. She would soon become Chair of the Technology Education Department for Framingham Public Schools, and later Director of Career/Technical Education for Newton.

Spicer got her doctorate in Education from UMass-Boston and an honorary doctorate in Humanities from the Mass. College of Liberal Arts.

She is currently Vice President of Advocacy & Educational Partnerships for the National Center for Technological Literacy division at the Museum of Science. In that role she strategizes with business, colleges and universities, policymakers, school districts, and educational agencies to create advocacy efforts and partnerships to build a global impact in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Spicer was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick and reappointed by Governor Charlie Baker to serve on the Massachusetts STEM Advisory Council and she served as a consultant to the National Governors Association. She is a member of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable STEM & Early Childhood Committees and is also an Advisory Board Member of the MA State Treasurer’s Economic Empowerment Trust fund.

"Framingham is at a historic crossroad and needs a mayor to take this brand new city in the right direction, Spicer said. "My whole adult life -- in education and in work -- has been about building things. And it’s been about bringing people together to get good things done. I plan to do that and more for Framingham."
