FRAMINGHAM, MA — Framingham Rep. Jack Lewis has picked incumbent U.S. Sen. Ed Markey in an impending race between two prominent Democrats. U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III has stepped up to challenge Markey, who is seeking a second term in the U.S. Senate.

Lewis said in a statement he's endorsing Markey because of the incumbent's stance on issues like climate change and healthcare.

"Senator Markey is widely known as the top environmental leader in the Senate, authoring the Green New Deal and fighting throughout his career for clean energy solutions. In addition to his record on climate change, Senator Markey has long been a champion on LGBTQ issues, healthcare and worker’s rights. His record is expansive and we are lucky to have his experience and leadership fighting for Massachusetts every single day," Lewis said in a statement.

Markey also picked up the endorsement of Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins this week. There's still time for more candidates to enter the race — Democratic primary won't be held until September 2020.

Before the Senate, Markey served for 36 years representing the 7th Congressional District, which included Framingham, Natick, and Wayland. The 7th was redistricted in 2013 to include only Boston, Cambridge and some surrounding communities. U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley now holds the seat.
