REI Offering Free Stand Up & Paddle Classes

The REI in Framingham , in conjunction with the state, is offering free paddleboard classes Friday, Aug. 15.

The REI store in Framingham, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), will offer two free learn to stand up and paddleboard classes.

Come learn everything you need to know to get started in the exciting sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding.

In the class you’ll learn the proper stance for balance and control, essential paddle strokes and turning techniques, as well as how to choose the right board and paddle. Participants will learn how:

To become familiar with SUP, equipment, and proper clothing to safely and comfortably pursue SUP To learn effective paddling skills, balance, positioning, movement and falling/recovery techniques Introduce the rewarding aspects of SUP by highlighting the benefits, some places to paddle and the various activities that take you onto the water, with an emphasis on respect for the marine/aquatic environment.

Courses will be held on protected calm water, and no experience is necessary.

Come with us to learn this hybrid of surfing and paddling and find out how to walk on water!

All gear is included in the free class.

The classes are Friday, Aug. 15, 10 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The classes will be held at Neponset Park in Milton.

Minimum age is 13. There are 10 spots in each class.

There is a required legal form: The course requires the participant to read and sign a liability release form before participating. Please see “Required Legal Form” for the session you are registering for. You will need to print, sign and bring the form to your class.

Registration is first come first serve at www.rei.com/Framingham.

Normally REI offers these 2-hour classes for $90 for non-members. These classes are free thanks to REI and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
