The state requires public school students to be in school 180 days. Under state law school can not be in session on July 1, as that starts a new fiscal year.

Members of the Class of 2015 are exempt from the 180 day rule.

The state can issue a waiver for the 180 days. The Commonwealth did that across most of the state during the Blizzard of 1978.

During an ice storm in central Massachusetts a few years ago, the state rejected a request for a waiver and some students had to attend school on Saturdays to make the 180 day requirement.
