NY Times Bestselling Author Michael Tougias to Speak on Extreme Survival
Author Michael Tougias will be giving a slide presentation on his book Extreme Survival: Lessons From Those Who Have Triumphed Against All Odds. This event will be held at Sudbury Grange, 326 Concord Road, Sudbury on Wednesday evening, May 6, 2026, at 7 PM. This free program is being presented by the Friends of the Goodnow Library and is made possible by a generous bequest from Stella and Frank Ricciardi to the Friends of the Goodnow Library. Free parking is available behind Sudbury Town Hall. Please note: The Sudbury Grange elevator is back in service for those who prefer to avoid stairs. &nbsp;
In his book, Extreme Survival, Tougias shares what he has learned about decision making under pressure and the mindsets and techniques survivors used to channel their energy into proactive decisions that saved their lives. He demonstrates that the same techniques can help anyone be more resilient when feeling overwhelmed or facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge in their personal or professional life. The methods shared can also be used by anyone who has an important goal. They provide inspiration and step by step practices to overcome obstacles and achieve a person’s full potential.
Tougias uses slides from some of the survival events to give the audience an edge-of-your-seat experience that also provides useful techniques that we can all use when faced with adversity or aspire to achieve a difficult goal.
The author has interviewed over 100 people who survived against all odds, and has researched many historical figures who have achieved the near-impossible. He supplements their stories with a handful of first person accounts from some of the toughest survivors in history. Some of the survivors from history include John McCain, Mary Rowlandson (captive during King Philip’s Indian War), Howard Blackburn, Captain Bligh, Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl, mountainman Hugh Glass, Admiral Byrd, Shackleton, WWII pilot James Whittaker, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK (PT109), USS Indianapolis survivors, and many more from mountain climbers to early explorers of the new world.
Tougias has written seven survival and rescue books and Extreme Survival is the culmination of his life’s work of interviewing and researching the toughest survivors over the past three decades. He has earned critical acclaim and literary awards for his 30 bestselling non-fiction narratives. Some of his books include The Finest Hours (now a Disney movie), A Storm Too Soon, Overboard and The Waters Between Us. <ul><li>Patrick "Daydream" St. Pierre&nbsp;is a Framingham based artist creating vibrant, story-driven work. He works out of the Saxonville Mills and paints murals and fine art.</li><li>Valarie Poitier, an internationally recognized fiber artist and quilter. Her artworks often stitch together her interpretation of historical events and have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the world. She is the current Artist in Residence at Open Spirit.</li></ul>
Potters:
<ul><li>Sarah Fuhro's&nbsp;pottery is a reflection of her love of the earth ad the forms and images that inspire her.</li><li>Candy Sidner&nbsp;has been making pottery for over 30 years. She makes functional ware, often decorated with flowers, birds, or scenes, and also makes animal sculptures.</li></ul>
Photography:
<ul><li>Fran Bogle, a life-long nature lover, traveler, writer and photographer. She enjoys taking photos that invite us to look into the world in new ways.</li><li>Liz Rosseel is working on a collection of photographs and poems. She finds inspiration from the natural world as well as from the twists and turns of our everyday lives.</li></ul>
Refreshments will be served.
There will be art for sale and a silent auction, with proceeds going to support Open Spirit. Cash or check only for silent auction.

Founded on a Vision of Radical Welcome and Music With a Message, Sound &amp; Spirit Holds Anniversary Concerts in Natick on May 8 and 9, 2026

113 Members Range in Age From 8 to 90; Families Perform Side-by-Side

In 2011, as movements like Occupy Wall Street pushed Americans everywhere to question who gets heard and who belongs, a small group of singers gathered around a dining room table in Natick, Massachusetts, asked their own version of that same question:&nbsp;

What if a community choir were truly built on community. No audition required—just choir folk from the community who love to sing.&nbsp;

And what if, instead of separating children, teens, and adults, their voices came together in one intergenerational ensemble?

From that question, <a href="https://www.soundandspirit.net/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Sound &amp; Spirit</a> was born.&nbsp; The vibrant, intergenerational choir bringing together singers from ages 8 to over 90 was founded on a vision that extended beyond music to something deeper: a space where no one is excluded, and a community rooted in joy, growth, and belonging.

At the heart of Sound &amp; Spirit is a simple but powerful philosophy: radical welcome. <a href="https://www.soundandspirit.net/artisticteam" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Creative Director Kate Leavey and Associate Director Cathi Ianno</a> invite members to show up fully as they are—finding not just a place to sing, but a place to belong and to grow. The result is what many describe as a “Cheers effect,” where every voice is known, valued, and missed when absent. 
That sense of belonging is reinforced through the choir’s signature approach to “music with a message:”
<ul><li>Each concert is built around a theme, weaving together diverse musical genres to explore ideas that resonate deeply with both performers and audiences.</li><li>From its first performance, “Songs for a Revolution,” to its upcoming fifteenth anniversary concert, Sound &amp; Spirit uses music not only to entertain, but to reflect, connect, and inspire.</li><li>It views music as a force for good, as exemplified by the “Gifts for Good” initiative—spotlighting organizations making a difference and amplifying causes for positive change.&nbsp;</li></ul>
For many members, the impact goes far beyond the stage. Over the years, singers have found the confidence to face long-held fears, the courage to try something new, and the joy of connecting across generations in ways few other experiences allow. Families have performed side by side. Friendships have formed across decades of age difference. And individuals who once doubted their place in a performance setting have discovered their voice—both musically and personally.
To mark fifteen years bridging generations and inspiring change, it will hold concerts May 8 and 9th in Natick featuring a selection of favorite songs from past performances that offer a window into the choir’s evolution and a reaffirmation of the values that have sustained it.
Fifteen years after that first question was asked around a dining room table, Sound &amp; Spirit continues to answer it in the same way—by bringing people together in song, and in doing so, creating ripples of connection that extend far beyond the music itself.
