Life Isn’t a Sprint: It’s a Marathon!

Happy Marathon Monday...give yourself a break from the sprint of life!

In honor of the 117th Boston Marathon I wanted to post about...life. That’s right: the start, the straight-aways, the heartbreak hills and the finish life. Marathoners train...hard...for many years to perfect their time. They know that you simply don’t wake up, lace up and finish in grand fashion. You need to put in the effort, have the strength to give it a go and the stamina to make it last. While running may be one of the more solitary sports out there runners also need something else: support. The hundreds of people that line the streets to cheer them on, the partners that cover their ears at 5:00am alarm clocks and the people who simply say, ‘yes, you can’, when best doesn’t feel good enough.

So are you seeing it yet? The similarities. I am lucky, I wake up most days, put on my yoga pants and top and head to a job I love. However, I still have to make it happen. I train through my own practice, through taking classes with others and expanding my knowledge of what I love. I falter, like when Swirls and Scoops opens each spring and I have a banana split for dinner. I am supported by everyone from the community I live in to the family I love.

Life and marathons are very similar, and I think it’s helpful to also take the same mentality to your fitness routine. Some days you are the cover of a magazine, others you feel like a comic-strip character and some days are somewhere in between. What matters is you are committed: to yourself, to your health and to being there for those around you. These are the things I truly believe as I open at Dance Soul Motion.
